Due to the upcoming apostolic visit of Benedict XVI to Cuba, President Lech Walesa has written a letter to the pope asking him to intercede for the Cuban political prisoners and human rights activists. “I truly hope that Your Holiness’ visit will contribute to the positive changes in the life of the Cuban nation. I beg Your Holiness to intercede for those who are in prison because of their convictions. I ask Your Holiness to take up the defense of those Cubans who demanding freedom are at the risk of persecutions and humiliation” – wrote Lech Walesa.
The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is pleased to announce that 2010 Oslo Freedom Forum speaker and Cuban blogger Yoani Sánchez was awarded the inaugural CEPOS Freedom Award, in the amount of $50,000, by the independent Danish think tank, CEPOS.
