Lech Walesa asks the Pope for solidarity with Cubans

Due to the upcoming apostolic visit of Benedict XVI to Cuba, President Lech Walesa has written a letter to the pope asking him to intercede for the Cuban political prisoners and human rights activists. “I truly hope that Your Holiness’ visit will contribute to the positive changes in the life of the Cuban nation. I beg Your Holiness to intercede for those who are in prison because of their convictions. I ask Your Holiness to take up the defense of those Cubans who demanding freedom are at the risk of persecutions and humiliation” – wrote Lech Walesa.

Yesterday evening (March 11) in a phone conversation with Guillermo Fariñas, the Cuban dissident on hunger strike, President Lech Walesa declared his help and asked for suspending the protest. “I perfectly understand your situation and the situation Cuba is in. I declare my help and support in building a free Cuba. But I would like to ask you to rethink your decision. A free Cuba needs leaders such as you” - said Lech Walesa.
